Organization Overview

Affirming Behavioral Health (ABH) was initially formed in partnership with the Maine Transgender Network (MTN), a state-wide transgender support organization with two decades of work in LGBTQ+ peer support and advocacy. Longtime community leaders in this field had identified an urgent need for services to fill substantial gaps in the persistently unmet healthcare needs faced by Maine’s transgender population and other members of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly those living in rural areas. An Advisory Team was formed to consider options, and after much study and with a goal of delivering sustainable, gender-informed, systemic change to the LGBTQ+ community, ABH was created with the intent of establishing an outpatient clinic in the Bangor, Maine area specializing in treating queer and trans clients. To ensure accessibility to Mainers statewide, we will also provide robust telehealth services and intend to prioritize diverse methods of client outreach. Our entire leadership team (Board of Directors, Advisory Team, and staff) are members of the LGBTQ+ community and bring extensive lived and professional experience relevant to ABH’s mission and the intersecting needs of our target client base. We have initiated the hiring of our initial clinical staff, prioritizing a wide and diverse applicant pool to lead ABH into operation as we begin 2026.
