Director of Advancement
Position Summary:
The Director of Advancement serves as a strategic advisor to the CEO, Management Team, and Board of Directors, ensuring that the organization’s ambitious goals are in line with the mission and will achieve impact that can be funded by a range of philanthropic gifts, grants, and sponsorships. This position works closely with the CEO and Director of Finance to lead annual budgeting and long-range financial planning, specifically assessing the organization’s charitable revenue generation opportunities and current position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Major Gifts Management: Develop and manage a portfolio of major donors (individuals, corporations, foundations), cultivating five- and six-figure gifts through solicitation, stewardship, and relationship-building.
- Fundraising Strategy & Execution: Design and lead comprehensive fundraising plans, including annual appeals, capital campaigns, planned giving, special campaigns, and grant development.
- Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor the Advancement team, fostering a collaborative, goal-driven environment; oversee staff performance, professional development, and alignment with organizational mission and values.
- Marketing and Communications Oversight: Collaborate with the Marketing & Communications Manager to create strategies that enhance BGCSM’s visibility, strengthen donor engagement, and support fundraising initiatives.
- Board and Volunteer Engagement: Support and engage board members, volunteers, and committees in fundraising activities; serve as lead strategist for the Resource Development and Public Affairs Committees.
- Financial Planning and Reporting: Partner with the CEO and Director of Finance on long-range revenue planning, departmental budgeting, gift processing, pledge documentation, and donor database management.
- External Relations: Represent BGCSM at public speaking engagements, community events, and networking opportunities to promote awareness and build community relationships.
- Organizational Leadership: Participate as an active member of the Leadership Team, contributing to strategic planning, trend analysis, and organizational decision-making.
The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine (BGCSM) is to inspire and enable all young people (ages 6-18), especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The organization has been providing youth development programs for more than 100 years with safe places to learn, have fun and develop skills and interests that last a lifetime.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of nonprofit fundraising leadership experience, including major gifts and capital campaign management.
- Demonstrated success building and leading high-performing teams.
- Strong background in donor engagement, grant writing, and corporate partnership development.
- Proficient with CRM databases (preferably Raiser’s Edge) and project management tools (Asana or similar).
- Excellent public speaking, writing, and relationship management skills.
- Working knowledge of nonprofit finance principles and fundraising reporting best practices.
- Demonstrated experience with individual, corporate and foundation, and government funding.
- Experience overseeing marketing, branding, and communications strategy preferred.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Starting at $100,000; commensurate with experience
