Position Description

The Engagement Manager will be responsible for building and implementing strategies to enhance Hearty Roots’ visibility, strengthen relationships with donors and supporters, and foster community engagement. This role is brand new to our organization and will combine strategic communications, creative marketing, donor cultivation, and community outreach to elevate the organization’s mission, promote its programs, and engage with stakeholders to drive growth and sustainability. Organization Overview

Hearty Roots is a youth development organization that mindfully fuses social-emotional wellness with nature connection. Our proactive, inclusive, and out-of-the-box approach to youth programming allows kids to access the outdoors in all seasons to restore, rejuvenate, and reset. Our office headquarters is in Damariscotta, and our campus grounds are in Bremen.

Position Requirements and Qualifications

Key Responsibilities:

 Communications and Marketing

  • Develop and implement an integrated communications and marketing strategy that aligns with the organization’s mission, vision, and goals.
  • Oversee the creation of all marketing materials, including program promotion, newsletters, social media content, press releases, videography and website updates.
  • Manage and curate content for social media platforms to promote programs, events, and organizational news.
  • Write compelling, clear, and consistent messaging for internal and external communications that resonate with the program’s target audiences.
  • Oversee the organization’s website and donor / volunteer database, ensuring it is current, engaging, and user-friendly.
  • Track marketing efforts, analyze data, and make recommendations to improve outreach strategies.

Advancement

  • Assist in identifying, cultivating, and stewarding relationships with individual donors and corporate sponsors.
  • Develop and manage donor engagement strategies, including targeted campaigns, appeal letters, and online donation drives.
  • Coordinate fundraising efforts, including major gifts, recurring donations, and special events.
  • Ensure timely and thoughtful donor acknowledgment and recognition.
  • Track and report on fundraising progress and success, ensuring alignment with organizational financial goals.

Community Engagement

  • Coordinate and manage logistics and resources for several community-building events and gatherings throughout the year, serving as the primary point of contact for participants and volunteers.
  • Work with staff and volunteers to ensure seamless event operations, including logistics, marketing, and post-event follow-up.
  • Develop and manage event promotion strategies to ensure maximum participation and engagement.
  • Establish presence and maintain relationships in mission-aligned membership organizations, (for example, Maine Outdoor Brands & Maine Youth Thriving)

  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop and implement long-term engagement strategies that align with the organizational goals of a rapidly growing nonprofit 
  • Creative Vision: Innovative approach to event planning and public relations to attract new supporters.
  • Communication Expertise: Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to craft clear, compelling messaging for diverse audiences.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to lead high-quality events and campaigns, maintaining precision and excellence.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage volunteers, and collaborate across departments.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in communications and marketing
  • Proven experience in donor development and fundraising strategies
  • Strong IT skills necessary to effectively take lead on squarespace website, Bloomerang database, and graphic / video design

Occasional evening or weekend work is required for some events or engagements.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time in-person position, with flexibility around occasional remote work. We offer a generous PTO package and a modest health care stipend. If you need full healthcare benefits, this might not be the right year for you to get involved with Hearty Roots, though we plan to provide more comprehensive health benefits in 2026.
