Maine Conservation Voters (MCV) and Maine Conservation Alliance (MCA) are seeking a dedicated and experienced Bookkeeper/Finance Manager to lead MCA/MCV’s accounting and finance operations. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing the financial operations of the organizations and our Political Action Committee, while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and transparency in all financial matters. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to the mission of environmental conservation.

Job Description: The Bookkeeper/Finance Manager will support our organizations’ missions, strategic plans, and priorities by working to manage our financial systems and will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing financial transactions, and assisting in the overall financial management of the organization. This role will ensure transparency, accountability, and compliance with relevant financial regulations. The ideal candidate has a strong background in bookkeeping, excellent organizational skills, and share’s MCA/MCV’s commitment to racial equity and inclusion.

Key responsibilities

  1. Financial Management:
  • Manage the overall budget, cash flow and finances of MCA, MCV, and MCV Action Fund in coordination with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, Operations Director, and Board Finance Committees.
  • Maintain financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Monitor financial performance and provide regular reports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Lead annual tax filings and audits in coordination with accounting firm.
  • Track the income and expenses of Maine Conservation Voters Action Fund PAC and ensure accurate and timely reporting to the Maine Ethics Commission.
  1. Bookkeeping and Accounting:
  • Manage day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using QuickBooks accounting software.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP standards.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors for annual audits and tax filings.
  1. Grant Management:
  • Track grant revenue and expenses, ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
  • Prepare financial reports for grantors and donors as needed.
  1. Compliance and Risk Management:
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, as well as non-profit reporting requirements.
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; create and update financial policies and procedure manuals.
  • Monitor and update internal controls to mitigate financial risks and safeguard organizational assets.
  • Stay abreast of changes in accounting standards and regulatory requirements affecting non-profit organizations.
  1. Financial Planning and Strategy:
  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team and staff to develop annual budgets and long-term financial plans.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to support strategic decision-making and programmatic goals.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings, and financial operational efficiency improvements.
  1. Fiscal Sponsorship:
  • Provide financial oversight, management, and tracking for MCA’s fiscally-sponsored organization, Community Organizing Alliance.

Position Requirements and Qualifications
  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in financial management and accounting, preferably in a non-profit organization.
  • Proficiency in accounting software including QuickBooks and Microsoft Office suite, including Excel.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and generate actionable insights.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff, board members, and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly wage for this position is $30/hour. As a part-time employee, this position is not eligible for benefits.
