Over the last few years, we have seen continued challenges to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Reduced funding, covert and overt attacks, and fatigue in the movement are real and present obstacles to racial equity. However, we know that DEI initiatives work and are important to our sector.
Building Movement Project's recent report Blocking the Backlash: The Positive Impact of DEI in Nonprofit Organizations, "affirm the importance and effectiveness of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in nonprofit organizations, especially for staff of color. The data also suggests that DEI is a starting point, not a solution, for addressing issues of racial bias in the sector, and that many organizations need more capacity and expertise to push through common tensions that arise in nonprofit workplaces when they are taking steps to become more equitable and inclusive."
To help us all recommit or move further in our racial equity work, to celebrate what we've been able to accomplish, and what the future of this work looks like, please join us at this upcoming event.
Learn successful strategies for implementing this work in Maine, how organizations make change and build resiliency, and connect with colleagues who are committed to improving their work, their workplace, and the world through a commitment to equity.
President & CEO of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) Marcus Walton will share his experiences as a leader in this work and offer his analysis of the importance of exploring the overlap between racial equity and other areas like rural development and workforce expansion. Following Marcus, a panel of local community leaders will share how they have continued to advance this work and lean into their values despite targeting and pushback.
