Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversees the Development and Events Coordinator
General Purpose: Donor stewardship, fundraising strategy and planning
Schedule: This position is a member of the Midcoast Humane administrative team, schedule is ordinarily Mon-Fri. Weekends, and evenings required as events needs dictate.

Position summary

Midcoast Humane is looking for an experienced, strategic, enthusiastic, and outgoing development professional to lead the organization's fundraising efforts, expand and deepen our community connections and instill a culture of philanthropy among staff, volunteers, and board members.

The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to create the strategy for Midcoast Humane, build an effective development team with the staff necessary to achieve the various annual fund initiatives, and lead the effort to build on the success of our fundraising activities over the last few years.

Position description

The Development Director will report to the Executive Director, serve on the MH Leadership Team and manage the the Development and Events Coordinator. The primary responsibilities of the Development Director are as follows:

Lead/Manage Midcoast Humane's Development Function

  • Create and implement the annual Development Plan that includes strategy and tactics for achieving Annual Fund goals
  • Maintain Annual Fund metrics and achieve annual fundraising goals
  • Support the Board Development Committee Chair with development planning and implementation activities
  • Identify and pursue foundation grant funding through identification and cultivation of appropriate prospects, and preparation and submission of grant proposals and reports
  • Establish the infrastructure necessary to ensure the accuracy and currency of the donor database
  • Prepare monthly Development Reports for the Development Committee and Board of Directors
  • Collaborate with the Marketing & Communications Manager to:
    • Integrate development-related strategy and donor-focused content into all materials, including annual report and donor recognition materials
    • Plan and implement strategy around fundraising appeals, both in print and online
    • Integrate a culture of gratitude into MH's communications
  • Create and maintain a robust and effective donor stewardship plan
  • Oversee other activities necessary to support the development function

Lead/Manage Individual and Corporate Giving

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to identify, cultivate and solicit major gifts to the One Paw at a Time Major Gifts Campaign
  • Lead individual and corporate giving initiatives for Midcoast Humane:
    • Retain and grow individual giving at all levels, including monthly Humane Heroes program
    • Continue to develop and grow the corporate giving program
    • Work closely with the Board Development Committee to plan and execute events including the 75th anniversary event
    • Work with the Executive Director to identify, cultivate and solicit Forever Friends prospects (Planned Giving)
    • Maintain a robust schedule of outreach and communication to deepen relationships with individual donors and prospects

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years' experience working in nonprofit fundraising and development
  • Ability to think outside the box and creatively assess fundraising avenues
  • Ability to manage competing responsibilities and proven skills in project management
  • Experience and desire leading a team and supporting the leadership of an organization
  • Demonstrated ability to build personal relationships with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Comfort leading solicitations in-person and virtually, and coaching solicitation partners
  • Experience with database management
  • Affinity for animal welfare

Schedule and requirements

The Development Director position is a full-time position with the expectation that the individual will be on site at the shelter unless they are out in the community making solicitations or attending events.

Salary and benefits

The salary range is $60,000-$80,000 annually commensurate with experience plus benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, at cost pet supplies, 140 hours of paid time off annually and 6 paid holidays.
