MaineCF’s Cumberland County Committee awards $101,000 in grants

Friday, May 1, 2020

The Cumberland County Committee of the Maine Community Foundation has awarded $101,802 in grants to 16 nonprofits.

Grant recipients include:

  • Avesta Housing Development Corporation, to promote housing stabilization for formerly homeless residents in affordable housing
  • In Her Presence, to support preventing loneliness in Maine’s elder immigrant and refugee women through the "Aging Excellence" program
  • Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, to establish a food processing program that reduces food waste, increases pre-prepped fruits and vegetables for guests, and reduces the purchase of canned goods.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MaineCF staff worked remotely with available county/regional committee members to expedite review of proposals. Grant recipients have the choice of extending the period during which to complete the work originally proposed and/or the flexibility to use the funding in other ways to meet current, unexpected organizational needs.

The Cumberland County Fund is a permanent endowment that supports projects and nonprofits that strengthen communities in the county. Applications go through the foundation’s Community Building Grant Program and are reviewed by a committee of local leaders. The next proposal deadline is February 15, 2021. Application, guidelines and a complete list of grants can be found at www.mainecf.org.

The Cumberland County Fund is built through donations from the community. If you would like more information about the fund, please contact MaineCF Program Officer John Ochira at 1-877-700-6800 or jochira@mainecf.org.
