Sarah Decontie performs a jingle dance outside

We are excited to welcome Sarah Decontie and David Caparaz to the stage for a special performance featuring a jingle dance and drumming ahead of our afternoon network-building session. This presentation offers time to gather, learn about the performance, and appreciate Indigenous artistry. You can learn more about each performer below.

Sarah Decontie Biography
My name is Sarah Decontie and I am a proud member of the Algonquin First Nation of Kitigan Zibi, Quebec and the Penobscot Nation of Indian Island, Maine. I began learning the teachings and how to jingle dance from a close friend of mine in 2013. Although I appreciate all of our beautiful dances, I have grown a true passion for the jingle dress dance. As a jingle dress dancer, it is my honor and duty to dance for those that are in need of healing. I have performed at many events including schools, social gatherings, Powwows, corporate events, Canada Day 150, as well as many other functions. One of my greatest accomplishments occurred in 2016 when I was asked to be the Head Dancer for my community at the 2016 Kitigan Zibi Powwow in which I humbly accepted.

David Caparaz Biography
David Caparaz was born in San Diego, CA in 1984 then moved to Indian Island, ME in 1999. Got first change to drum and sing with my father, the late Dominic Polchies on the drum group Spirit of the Dawn in 1994. Created the drum group with my father, the Alamoosic Lake singers in 2002 and have been performing ever since then. Took over the drum group for my father out of respect that I would keep it going for him after he passed away back in 2016. Alamoosic Lake singers have performed at powwows all over the country and have won and placed in several drum contests.
